“Integrative running water ecology“. Fundamental understanding of how riverine ecosystems, from headwater springs to estuaries, are physically structured, host biodiversity and drive major biogeochemical processes.
The lecture will review (i) the physical template of riverine environments (hydrology, geophysical structure and morphology), (ii) riverine biodiversity and the factors supporting it, and (iii) the major biogeochemical processes driving river functioning and linking them to global elemental cycles. To this aim, the lecture will introduce into a range of existing concepts of riverine (ecosystem) ecology that successfully capture various physical, biological and functional aspects of these complex ecosystems. Major anthropogenic influences will also be covered.
