Basic understanding of mountain systems

Mountain areas cover up to 27% of the Earth’s land surface with 1 billion inhabitants and provide essential resources like fresh water for a significant proportion of the Earth’s population. Within this lecture, students learn how mountain systems are defined and get insights into a broad range of topics from the natural and social sciences relevant for mountain regions. The course deals with contents e.g. related to geomorphology, climate and environment, tourism, agriculture or conservation, and is related to current research activieties within the research area "Mountain Regions".

An excursion will be offered in the following summer semester to deepen the knowledge and gain pratical experiences.
