The teaching of a broad basic knowledge in Earth sciences will provide to the students an insight in geological processes and process-oriented geological thinking. Furthermore geological exploration methods are presented and their resolution as well interpretation limits will be discussed. This class should help the future engineers to better consider the properties of the subsoil and to facilitate the cooperation with geologists.

With Prof. Strasser:

  • Earth´s interior structure & plate tectonics
  • Mineral & Rocks (magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks)
  • Geological structures and Surfaces (interpreting geological maps and cross sections
  •  Hydrogeology
  • Engineering geological & geophysical exploration methods
  • Geology of Austria

With Prof. Schneider-Muntau:

  • Describing and classifying soils and rocks for civil engineering purposes
  • Site investigations
  • Importance of discontinuities for civil engineering structures
  • Natural hazards, especially slope movements
  • Remedial measures for instable slopes
  • Engineering geological aspects for dams, reservoirs, tunnels and caverns
