Students can describe the basic physical and mechanical properties of ice and snow and explain and apply simple mechanical models for engineering tasks (e.g. settlements, ground failure, creep pressure) and for issues relevant to natural hazards (e.g. avalanche pressure, runout lengths, dam heights). They can name the limitations of these models resulting from the modeling assumptions and are thus able to apply the models professionally and evaluate their results. They have the ability to familiarize themselves with more complex models of avalanche dynamics.

  • ice and snow physics (including metamorphosis of snow)
  • mechanical properties of ice and snow, material models
  • stress state in the snow pack, deformation of the snow pack
  • snow pressure
  • avalanche release (essential factors and mechanism)
  • avalanche movement: classification, velocities, forces, dynamic models, hazard zones
