Compulsory Module 1: Introduction I: European Ethnology as Cultural Studies (10 ECTS-Credits, 4 h)

Learning Outcome: Students get an overview of the history of science and the specifics of the discipline. They
have advanced knowledge of the theory and methodology and work with the key concepts of
the discipline.
Compulsory Module 2: Introduction II: Reading Course (5 ECTS-Credits, 2 h)

Learning Outcome: Students are able to independently and critically deal with subject-specific scientific texts,
also in consideration of gender-related issues and theories, as well as foreign language literature.
They work in and with different digital learning environments.
Compulsory Module 3: Modernisation and Mediality (10 ECTS-Credits, 4 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to confidently reflect on and work with the key terms of mediality and
modernisation in their importance for society as well as the discipline. They use their analytical
potential for research fields of the subject and know about their fundamentals and tendencies
in the respective fields.
Compulsory Module 4: Cultural Dynamics and Pluralisation (10 ECTS-Credits, 4 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students have an advanced knowledge of the current research fields of the subject in relation
to dissolution of cultural practices. They have practised empirical techniques with real case
studies and are able to practically apply the acquired skills in European Ethnology, e.g. tourism
or migration.
Compulsory Module 5: Memory, Recollection and Narration (10 ECTS-Credits, 4 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: The students have comprehensive understanding of current handling of the past. The concepts
of memory (storage), construction of the past (recollection) and narration (creation of meaning)
can be thoroughly pervaded analytically and categorised theoretically.
Compulsory Module 6: Ethnographic Research Practices (10 ECTS-Credits, 4 h)

Learning Outcome: Students improve their writing skills and are able to develop a research design. They are able
to apply subject-specific methods, evaluate the data won and present the results of ethnographic
Research.
Compulsory Module 7: Culture and Historicity (10 ECTS-Credits, 4 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students have an advanced insight in the historical perspective of cultural analysis. They have
specialised knowledge of the historic dimensions of phenomena of today and are able to contextualise
and critically analyse processes of Change.
Compulsory Module 8: Excursions: European Ethnology (15 ECTS-Credits, 4 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students know selected fields of practice and research of the discipline and have consolidated
their skills for differentiated perception and self-reflective contemplation as well as for the
analysis of cultural phenomena.
Compulsory Module 9: Master's Thesis Defense (2.5 ECTS-Credits)

Prerequisites for registration: positive evaluation of all other compulsory and elective modules as well as
the Master's Thesis.
Learning Outcome: Examination of the Master's Thesis in the overall context of the Master's Programme European
Ethnology; with special focus on theoretical comprehension, methodical issues, communication
of findings of the Master's Thesis and presentation skills.
