Elective Module 1: Plant Diversity in Selected Native Habitats (5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to capture selected native habitats with regards to their flora, vegetation and ecology. They are able to distinguish different kinds and species of selected groups of native spermatophytes and are able to apply this knowledge to other Groups.
Elective Module 3: Methods of Evolutionary Biology, Plant Systematics and Biogeography (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 4 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to discuss the evolution of plants and are able to use their knowledge for finding solutions to theoretical and practical tasks. They can independently solve questions posed in evolutionary research by applying molecular and classical methods.
Elective Module 5: Biodiversity in Transition (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 4 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students know important invasive alien species (IAS) and key processes of biological invasions. They are able to use their knowledge for problems relating to nature protection. They are able to see and assess the impact of alien species on the native flora and vegetation as well as on man and Environment.
Elective Module 7: Analysis of Vegetation I (5 ECTS-Credits, 4 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students can collect, analyse and describe plant communities in the outdoors.
Elective Module 8: Analysis of Vegetation II (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to carry out research in vegetation studies and assess vegetation based on ecological criteria. They have knowledge of the flora and vegetation of a foreign flora Region.
Elective Module 9: Vegetation in Transition I (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are familiar with the concepts of vegetation change caused by climatic change or by men during the Quaternary period. They are able to document, interpret and critically discuss paleoecological data on vegetation change and to use the data to develop their own research concepts.
Elective Module 11: Hydrobotany (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to use microscopic-taxonomical, field-analytical and molecular instruments to perform ecological evaluation and monitoring Tasks.
Elective Module 13: Physiology I: Metabolism and Biochemistry (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students analyse the metabolism of plants and can interpret reactions of plants of environmental stress. They apply modern methods of analysis for measuring metabolites (e.g. chromatographic methods and metabolomics). They are able to demonstrate their knowledge during discussion of current publications.
Elective Module 14: Physiology II: Development (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students understand the fundamentals of plant development and their sensitivity to influences. They are familiar with the most important technologies in the area of biotechnology and genetic engineering and apply their knowledge in plant cultivation for breeding and propagation of plants.
Elective Module 16: Ecophysiology I: Plant and Environment (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students have theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of ecophysiology of plants and are able to analyse, interpret and critically discuss their own data and the data of others based on the current state of knowledge.
Elective Module 17: Ecophysiology II: Alpine Plants (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are familiar with specific functional adaptations of plants in the high mountains to the abiotic challenges of the alpine area, can distinguish them to others and use them specifically as models of abiotic resistance of plants.
Elective Module 19: Ecophysiology IV: Tree Growth (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students have knowledge of tree characteristics specific to growth and evolution and of their adaptability to extreme environmental conditions. They are also familiar with growthanalytical working techniques for conducting ecophysiological examinations in forests.
Elective Module 20: Philosophy of Science and Gender Research (7.5 ECTS-Credits, 5 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: In consideration of gender aspects, students are able to understand the peculiarities of biology in relation to the philosophy of science, its relationship with other disciplines and its history. Moreover, the students have a command of basic ethic terms and approaches, which enables them to independently reflect on ethical questions of research in biology and its application.
Elective Modulel 22: Selected Chapters of Botany II (5 ECTS-Credits, 3 h) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: With the courses offered in this module (partly held by guest lecturers) students get an insight into selected chapters of botanical sub-disciplines that are not covered by the elective modules 1-21.
A module from another Master Programme of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Innsbruck can be passed.
Elective Module 23: Modules from Other Master Programmes of the Faculty of Biology (5 ECTS-Credits) (no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: The prerequisites of the respective curricula do apply.
Learning Outcome: The objectives defined by the respective module give the students insights into another field of biology.
