Elective Module 1: German Medieval Studies (5 ECTS-Credits; 4 h)

Learning Outcome: The students can explain important aspects of the development of language history.
They can name and analyse phenomena of historical grammar on the basis of texts; are able to explain literary and cultural-historical contexts of the older literary epochs.
Elective Module 2: Fundamentals of the History of the Middle Ages (10 ECTS-Credits; 5 h)

Learning Outcome: The students have an orientation and overview knowledge of the history of the Middle Ages on the basis of key questions and guidelines. Acquisition of basic skills in dealing with historical sources and representations of the Middle Ages as well as the ability to present the newly acquired knowledge in oral and written form; acquisition of elementary knowledge and application of relevant auxiliary scientific methods.

Learning Outcome: Knowledge of the history of philosophy of the Middle Ages in overview form; ability to competently interpret philosophical texts in their historical context and as a source for contemporary questions and problem solving

Learning Outcome: Students have a comprehensive factual knowledge and an advanced understanding of the art of the high and late Middle Ages.
Elective Module 5: Medieval and Neo-Latin Language and Literature (5 ECTS-Credits; 4 h)

Learning Outcome: Graduates of this module have an overview of Medieval and Neo-Latin language and literature: They are able to trace the development of Latin language following antiquity and to elaborate linguistic characteristics of Medieval and Neo-Latin in texts of respective epochs. They have basic knowledge of history and culture of the Middle Ages and Modern Times. They know main Latin authors and works of the Middle Ages and Modern Times and are able to locate them in their historical and cultural context. They have dealt with the relationship of Medieval and Neo-Latin literature and are aware of its importance for the European intellectual history. Moreover, they have gained insights into specific genres and topics of Medieval and Neo-Latin literature and know the most important tools and methods of text interpretation.

Learning Outcome: The students know the historical development of Christianity from the beginning to the Middle Ages. They can independently present central events in church history in their social and theological context on a high theoretical level. The students can independently present the historical development, theological justification, the method and basic norms of the law of the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches in their internal structure and in relation to the state on a high theoretical level
