Compulsory Module 1: Written and Spoken Language Analysis (10 ECTS-Credits; 5-6 h)

Learning Outcome: Students will be able to recognise, scientifically describe and critically evaluate linguistic structures, present theoretical foundations and research methods in the field of written communication and apply these to the analysis and evaluation of concrete texts. Students are able to describe the functions and stylistic features of written language and to critically discuss norms of writing and text type conventions. They have acquired the ability to present theoretical foundations and research methods in the field of oral communication, to analyse and classify concrete communicative genres in the field of spoken language; they can also describe the differences between written and spoken language and discuss norms in the field of oral communication. Students acquire the skills to name and characterise the basics of a linguistic field (either grammar, linguistic special field, media analysis or recent language history); they know the state of research and the literature.
Compulsory Module 2: Specific Methods of Empirical Language Data Analysis (10 ECTS-Credits; 4h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: The students are able to work independently on a topic in a subarea of German linguistics. They are able to discuss basic questions of the relationship between language, media and communication and to apply basic methods of linguistic media and communication analysis.
Elective Module 1: Applied Linguistics (5 ECTS-Credits; 2h)

Learning Outcome: Students can present topics and methods in a special field of applied linguistics.
They can apply this knowledge as preparation for linguistically and communicatively oriented professional activities.
Elective Module 2: Practice of Linguistic Research (5 ECTS-Credits; 2 h)

Learning Outcome: Students can discuss topics and results of concrete linguistic research and apply methods of scientific working.
Elective Module 3: Digital Humanities (5 ECTS-Credits; 2 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to describe areas of application of the Digital Humanities. They are able to describe metadata and strategies of data modelling. They have the skills to name Open Access solutions for different requirements. They can demonstrate the use of XML-TEI for literary editions and can critically assess Digital Humanities and their limitations.
Elective Module 4: Advanced Topics in Linguistics (5 ECTS-Credits; 1 h)

Learning Outcome: Students acquire the skills to name and characterise the fundamentals of the linguistic area; they know the state of research and the literature.
Elective Module 5: Applied Linguistics (Advanced Course) (5 ECTS-Credits; 2h)

Learning Outcome: Students acquire the ability to name the basics of the sub-area(s) of applied linguistics. They know the state of research and the literature.
