Compulsory Module 1: Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry (10 ECTS-Credits, 6 h)
(no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to characterize the physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere. They know how to apply theory and methods of observation in order to
explain and observe the physical and chemical state of the atmosphere.
Compulsory Module 2: Climate and Cryrosphere (10 ECTS-Credits, 6 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students know the fundamentals of the dynamics of the earth's climate system and understand the most important processes of the climate system as well as the role of
cryosphere in the coupled earth system. They know the character of glaciers as climate sensors and water reservoir. They know how to apply this knowledge to concrete issue.
Compulsory Module 3: Atmospheric Dynamics (10 ECTS-Credits, 6 h)
(no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students know the most important approaches in the treatment of dynamic issues in the
atmosphere and resulting fluid characteristics on all scales. They are able to diagnose the influence of complex topography on atmospheric processes.
Compulsory Module 4: Boundary Layer Meteorology (12.5 ECTS-Credits, 7 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are familiar with the theoretical treatment of atmospheric processes in the planetary boundary layer and are able to experimentally apply this knowledge.
Compulsory Module 5: Numerical Modeling (10 ECTS-Credits, 6 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students know fundamental methods to solve partial differential equations in environmental sciences, development of weather, climate and glacier models as well as issues of forcing the model and data evaluation and are able to model independent solution approaches.
Compulsory Module 6: Weather Forecasting (5 ECTS-Credits, 3 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students are able to give weather forecasting on time scales from nowcasting to up to one year.
Compulsory Module 7: Scientific Methods (12.5 ECTS-Credits, 8 h)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Students can independently select and apply the appropriate statistical methods or write computer programmes to solve problems in atmospheric sciences. They master techniques for analysing and discussing scientific literature as well as present scientific results in written and oral form.
Compulsory Module 8: Advanced Topics (10 ECTS-Credits)
Prerequisites for registration: none
Learning Outcome: Advanced skills in one or several areas of expertise in atmospheric sciences.
COURSES
Courses from the curricula of other master¿s and diploma programmes (depending on the availability of free places), which enable in-depth knowledge of the subject matter of atmospheric sciences can be selected freely; possible fields are mathematics, statistics, geosciences, biology, chemistry, physics and other natural scientific subjects, engineering as well as gender aspects.
Compulsory Modules 9: Interdisciplinary Skills (10 ECTS-Credits)
Prerequisites for registration: the prerequisites of the respective curricula do apply
Learning Outcome: This module serves to widen the study programme and to acquire additional qualifications.
Agreement on the topic, the scope and the form of the Master`'s Thesis on the basis of a brief summary of the contents (abstract) as well as agreement on the work processes and the study progress. Planning of an appropriate time frame for the completion of the Master's Thesis.
Compulsory Modules 10: Preparation of the Master's Thesis (7.5 ECTS-Credits)
(no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: keine
Learning Outcome: After successful completion of this module, the students will be able to write a brief summary of the content of the planned Master's Thesis (abstract), to outline an anticipated schedule and to conclude a written Master's Thesis agreement.
Compulsory Module 11: Master's Thesis Defense (2.5 ECTS-Credits)
(no courses)
Prerequisites for registration: positive completion of all modules and positive assessment of the Master's Thesis
Learning Outcome: Reflection of the master's thesis in the general context of the master's programme. In this context, theoretical understanding, methodical fundamentals, presentation of results of the master's thesis and presentation skills are the main focus.
