INFO Minors (Complementary Subject Area)
Minors (Complementary Subject Areas) (30 ECTS-Credits)
Minors (Complementary Subject Areas) für Bachelor's Programmes at the University of Innsbruck
Minor: Austrian Studies (30 ECTS-Credits)
Prerequisites for registration: (1) The Minor "Austrian Studies" covering 30 ECTS-Credits can be selected by regular degree students of bachelor's programmes at the University of Innsbruck if the respective curriculum provides for the opportunity to pass a Minor. (2) The individual modules and courses of the Minor "Austrian Studies" can be studied providing the availability of places.
+ Learning Outcome
The Minor "Austrian Studies" bundles subjects from four faculties of the Leopold-Franzens-University (the Faculty of Philosophy and History, the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences). They all deal with the area of the former Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states in essential areas of their research as well as in their teaching and use different temporal as well as theoretical-methodological approaches in researching this common 'space' and the questions associated with it. ¿Austrian¿ is understood as a 'cultural space' produced by different societies along the time axis from the Holy Roman Empire via the Habsburg Monarchy, the First Republic and the Second World War to the Second Republic with the subsequent bloc formation, the consequences of 1989 and EU membership in 1995 up to the immediate present of Austria in the European and global context.
Graduates of the Minor "Austrian Studies" have advanced knowledge of the history and culture of Central and Southeast-Central Europe. They recognise the importance of political and social structures for social, legal and economic processes as well as for cultural developments (architecture, visual arts, literature, music, etc.) in this region in its historical depth and in its interconnectedness and they are able to interpret and classify current processes. They are therefore able to apply the acquired knowledge and the findings derived from it to the solution of relevant problems in their individual scientific and later professional field of activity. Through the Minor, students have a thematically as well as spatially focused complement to their respective major studies, based on key aspects of predominantly other disciplines in the field. Furthermore, they are able to develop interdisciplinary questions, to work on them accordingly and to present their results. In the joint development and discussion of the issues, they have also acquired social skills and are able to work in a team.
