Students will understand in which forms educational inequality exist, how inequality can be measured and how researchers try to explain it. They will get basic knowledge about socio-cultural, linguistic and religious diversity in the countries covered. Students will get to know different educational systems in Europe and how those differences impact inequality and equity. They will understand different research traditions, how they complement each other or compete in scientific and public discourse.

Empirical findings, theoretical approaches and methodological queries concerning educational inequality will be discussed in a country-comparative view. To that end they will get context knowledge concerning educational institutions and migration-related diversity. Basic theories concerning educational inequality will be part of the reading list.

The background information, organization, theoretical and methodological concept will be provided by Univ.-Prof.in Herzog-Punzenberger (UIBK) during 2 units in the beginning and at the end. Around 10 different researchers from Aurora-partner universities will present the research traditions of their countries in educational inequality. In the end we will organize a discussion among several of the guest-lecturers. Besides lecturing small group activities as well as think-pair-share will provide spaces of encountering students from other Aurora-universities as well. As the course covers 5 ECTs recherche, reading and writing of students in small groups with a mixed composition from different universities and countries is an important part of the course-work.

Participants are invited to voluntarily take part in a BEVI survey (Beliefs, Events, and Values Invetory, thttps://hebevi.com ). The online participation takes place right before and after the course and requires about 2x30 min.
