Students will have familiarised themselves with and understood the psychoanalytic approach and selected methods, concepts and theories. They will understand the basic features of psychodynamic thinking. They are aware of the benefits of their use in therapy, counselling, supervision and (social) education.

Psychoanalysis was born out of the impulse to understand the supposedly abnormal and to express and alleviate the suffering associated with it. It is interested in the irrational, the disruptive, the irritating and also the repulsive, which is not only to be found in the sick and the "mad". It assumes that this too has a meaning. However, this sense is not immediately apparent, but hidden. It takes a special way of thinking and acting to get to the bottom of it.
Psychoanalysis stands in a peculiar way on the threshold between medicine and the humanities and has developed a special relationship between research and healing, theory and practice.
In this seminar we will follow the development of psychoanalytic thought from its practice, using key terms and concepts in therapy, counselling and education.
