Psychoanalysis is in a tough spot: it has been largely pushed out of universities. It supposedly does not meet the scientific criteria of positivism and is therefore viewed as outdated. Despite the ongoing skepticism about psychoanalytic theory and practice, basic psychoanalytic insights have enjoyed immense success in everyday consciousness: people speak about their unconscious conflicts, about repression and projection, about the effects of their earliest experiences with their parents on their lives today. Movies, literature and the performing arts constantly use psychoanalytical motifs and question the hidden drives of their protagonists. Psychoanalysis seems simultaneously outdated and highly relevant. In this seminar, we will look at the foundations of psychoanalytical thinking and its applications in the field of pedagogy and cultural analysis.
