Students advance their knowledge in political science by specialising in different areas of the field.

Radicalisation and extremism

In this course on radicalisation and extremism, different theoretical and practical approaches will be presented and discussed. In the beginning, basic terms will be clarified. The key theoretical approaches to radicalisation and extremism are presented, different phenomena (right-wing extremism, jihadism, etc.) will be discussed. The social and legal handling of radicalisation/extremism - in terms of prevention, repression and anti-terror legislation - will be examined. We will also focus on the role of the internet and social media as drivers of polarisation and radicalisation. Finally, deradicalisation and exit work will be discussed.

Input by the lecturer and presentations by the students; discussions in groups/plenum; preparation of basic literature; writing a short paper. 

- Reading of literature provided by the lecturer and answering the questions on the texts (25%)

- Active participation in discussions and exercises, including online sessions  (25%)

- Researching a topic related to radicalisation/extremism and group presentation (25%)

- Writing a short paper (25%)
