The participants develop competencies to understand organizing and managing arts and cultural organizations: museums, theaters, opera companies, galleries, music & entertainment businesses. All students will work on a real-world case study in the art and cultural sector and will reflect/analyse the applicability of organizational/managerial theories in the practical context.      

Managing and Organizing Art & Cultural Organizations: Analysis and reflection of managerial and organizational practices in the art & cultural sector. A focus will lie on practice & practices of artistic creation.

I. Art & Culture as Social Phenomena – How art and culture are organized on a societal and organizational level? How does this influence artistic freedom and creativity?

II. Key managerial processes in the art and cultural sector: organizing, staffing, managerial control - functionalist and critical view

III. Strategy & Marketing in and for Art and Cultural Organizations

IV. The (non-)organization of art and culture

V. Human Resources Management & Leadership in the Arts and Culture Sector

VI. Performance, Performance Measurement, Impact and Control of Art and Cultural Organizations - Exploring Potentials and Limits

VII. How does the new come into the world: art and culture as a trigger for the new and the starting point of social and economic innovation

In interactive parts of the lecture 433047 & the seminar 433048 the following questions will be adressed:

How does governance, management, controlling and leadership in multi-stakeholder-settings look like?

How can we critically reflect on theories of organization, management and leadership, and how can we develop further the topics mentioned above in terms of praxis-theory?  

What do we learn from various cases in the field?

Input lectures, group & plenary discussions, discussion and analysis of case studies, reflection of relevant theories.

Collection and presentation of a case study; participation in interactive tasks and plenary discussions in the course; preparation of a seminar paper on the basis of the case study. 

The literature will be discussed in the first unit.

All students work in a small team to conduct a case study in a cultural organization. The focus of the case study depends on the interests and special areas of the respective team members: organization, controlling/accounting, strategy & marketing, etc.

The topics of the case studies will be discussed in the preliminary meeting on March 8th 2023 at 16:45pm.

Free elective for various Master's programs; max. 30 participants.
