Reading: To further advance students’ skills in close and analytical reading in addition to encouraging a critical approach to, and appreciation of, texts (journalistic, literary etc.). Writing: To further promote the conventions of effective writing focussing on language, content and structure in addition to practicing discursive and critical writing modes and summary writing skills.

Writing and reading discursive texts of a challenging nature (C1+). Learning and applying the forms of argumentative essay writing and effective summary skills.

Writing/Reading and critical appraisal of diverse texts of a more challenging nature - level C1+. Writing argumentative essays and critical reviews as well as critical in-class analysis of student writing. Reading: intensive analysis of more complex texts - irony, humour, allusion etc. and focusing on argumentative techniques and points of view. Writing: a) in-class analysis of students' work and perfection of discursive writing techniques b) summarising complex texts.

Module assessment: Tests of reading and writing skills. Course work assessment: regular written assignments. Final written exam and regular writing assignments.
