Students have a solid understanding of the key currents in gender studies in political science and are able to analyse the interdependence of gender and other categories – such as ethnicity, class, sexuality – with consideration of historical developments and the potential for change. Students can critically examine various types of political theories and empirical research in terms of their explicit and implicit gender norms. They can independently evaluate political strategies and gender policy in national, European and international contexts.

(Queer-)feminist state theory

In the seminar, different theorizations of the state will be presented. After an introduction to the foundations of feminist political science, the relationship between the state and gender in history and the present will be explored from Marxist-feminist, social-theoretical-feminist, post-structuralist-feminist, queer-theoretical, anti-racist and postcolonial perspectives. Questions that will be discussed include: To what extent is the genesis of the modern Western state gendered? How are gender and citizenship related? Is the law masculinist? How can the relationship between violence, the state, and bisexuality be conceptualized? Is the state a white ‘Männerbund’? How is the state intertwined with racial biopolitics? How does the state regulate gendered bodies? Can the state be an addressee for emancipatory gender politics?
