The aim of this course is to encourage analytical and close reading while introducing basic conventions of good writing techniques. It is a pre-essay writing course in which students will learn to compose both well-structured and varied sentences as well as coherent paragraphs. Texts will be analysed for structural elements such as unity, coherence and cohesion. Tasks will include summary writing and elementary paragraph production. Reading objectives: Introduction to close reading and interpreting texts. Writing objectives: To introduce the conventions of effective writing highlighting language, structure and content.

Reading content: A variety of texts on everyday topics. Writing content: (a) Sentence level: sentence elements and structure, relative clauses, subordination and co-ordination, punctuation (commas, colons, semicolons etc.) (b) Paragraph level: unity, coherence, cohesion, content etc.

a) Intensive study of texts for structural elements i.e. coherence and cohesion b) In-class analysis of student-written paragraphs c) Simple summaries

Exam: written tests of reading and writing skills Course assessment: regular written work
