Student acquire enhanced knowledge of selected issues of international politics with the help of specific examples.

Libya, Mali, and, perhaps soon, also Syria are places where so-called “humanitarian interventions” took place. International politics are always also about choices and choices always imply the possibility of moral arguments. Do norms, i.e. ethical standards, in international relations therefore matter and if so to what degree? The seminar will evaluate the wide spectrum of theoretical approaches to international ethics. In doing so we aim to illustrate: the difference of ethics and norms in international relations opposite to domestic ones as well as have a look at past and present case studies from a theoretical point of view.
