Overview on basic concepts of linguistics, basic knowledge of elements and levels of language(s), increased language awareness, insight in the basic mechanisms of communication.

This course gives an overview on essential definitions of language, introduces some basic theories of the linguistic sign, discusses the history of modern linguistics and explains the levels of language: study of sounds (phonetics/phonology), study of shape (morphology) and sentences (syntax), textual grammar as well as theories of meaning (semantics) and language use in communication (pragmatics). Numerours examples from diverse languages will illustrate the phenomena discussed with a focus on German, English, French, Russian and Latin.

lecture with discussions in the plenum on central questions and problems in linguistics; audio-visual aids (powerpoint, video-documentaries) and use of OLAT (all powerpoints of the lectures are provided, as well as discussion fora and exercises.
