This course will explore the decline of medieval civilization and the transition to a new phase of European history. It will provide a general survey of the political, religious, economic and cultural trends of Early Modern Europe (1500 – 1800) , with a special emphasis on developments in England, France and the Hapsburg dominions. An in-depth analysis of the intellectual and social ideas that finally culminated in the French Revolution will be an integral part of this class towards its end.
Lecture-Style Teaching, Student Interaction (group discussions as time allows).
1 written exam (at the end of the semester) and several oral exams throughout the summer 2014 (tba).
