645210 Excursion: In the beginning was Mollwitz. Silesia as an European border region
summer semester 2014 | Last update: 27.05.2014 | Place course on memo listExploring historical areas at the border of the (former) periphery of an (historical) territorial conglomerate: Silesia was part of the Habsburgian ruling areas since 1526, some parts got "lost" during the conflicts with Prussia as is known, after 1918 and 1945 the political powers changed again: What is today still there to find from this historical inheritance in these border and transition regions? What did the changing borders mean to the people living there, to their possibilities to develop and to their commemorative culture?
The battle of Mollwitz on the 10th April 1741 with the first victory of the Prussians against the Austrians marks the beginning of the Silesian wars, with which these duchies usually enter into the survey lectures of Austrian history and by that into the consciousness of the students. However, "Austrian" history in Silesia starts of course earlier, as for example with the university of Breslau by Leopold I in 1702 or with the Treaty of Altranstädt in 1707, by which Joseph I had to guarantee religious liberty to the Protestants in Silesia. On our way through these areas, that were called Prussian Silesia and Austrian Silesia after 1742, we will deal with the power relations, confessional differences and their impacts, with the economic developments and the commemorative culture.
