Learning outcomes: Basic knowledge of philosophical anthropology, its central questions, theories and terminologies with a special consideration of its implications for the philosophy of human rights; acquaintance with philosophical reasoning.

“What is the human being?” – this questions has always been a traditional concern of philosophical reasoning. However, doubts exist as to whether the aim in terms of describing a common human condition in fact has to come to an end in view of the various particularities of human culture and ways of life. In addition, recent findings in the field of paleogentics seem to challenge any conception of ontological unity of humankind. In light of these tensions, different theories of philosophical anthropology will be outlined and discussed. A special attention will be directed at their implications for the contested (non-)universality of human rights.
