To be able to deal with literary texts on a methodologically profound basis, and to develop a well grounded technique of understanding

We will read selected novellas by Stifter, Keller, Raabe, Heyse, Storm and Fontane and we will ask ourselves how to deal with a narrative text in the first place. Thereby, narratological analysis and interpretation, referring to the historical context, will be linked. Our interest will focus on the genre ‘Novella’ and on its specific qualities: the artistically constructed novellas from the second part of the 19th century seem particularly suitable to discuss narratological core questions such as temporal order, point of view, narrating instance, frame story/embedded story.

Independet reading, oral presentations, group discussions

Active participation in seminar discussions, oral presentation, written paper
