618032 Methodology of Art History: Artists, galleries, collectors, museums, art criticism and the state. About agreements, interests and connections
summer semester 2015 | Last update: 17.04.2015 | Place course on memo listThe aim is to provide extensive knowledge and deeper understanding of the topic.
The focus of the lecture will be both on the art system as a network of connections and interests of artists, gallery owners, collectors, museums, critics, the public and the state and on the theoretical foundations of the management of museums regarding questions of strategic planning, acquisition and exhibition policy, personnel planning and management, communication, distribution and financial policies, and spatial and functional programmes. We will discuss art as an agreed-upon concept of the very diverse players of the art system as well as factors of price formation of the art market. Students of art history will also gain insight into museum work: Specific examples will be used to explain the efficient content-related and financial planning and the realisation of art projects within the framework of the complex, interdependent museum structures. How does one calculate the budget for an exhibition? How does one evaluate an art project as far as quantity and quality are concerned? How does one approach a location analysis for a new museum? What does one have to take into consideration regarding artistic, budget, personnel and logistic aspects when planning an exhibition design? The aim of the lecture is to make the students familiar with the museum as a social entity, which between art and commerce, entertainment and education and science holds its ground in a constantly changing artistic, economic, social and political environment.
