641226 Literary, Media and Cultural Theories: A text is not a text is not a text - linguistic texts in and around art.
summer semester 2015 | Last update: 18.11.2015 | Place course on memo listThe participants not only come to know theoretical propositions about the relationship or relationality of (linguistic) texts and art, but find themselves in encounters with those pieces of art the fellows of “Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen” are currently working on. Those encounters have impact on the knowledge provided by the theoretical texts. We are made to ask ourselves how this former knowledge is challenged by the art: How does a text predominate the perception of art, how does art contradict the textual knowledge?
The relationship between texts and art (whereat the function of “and” itself has to be questioned) is linked to a highly controversial discussion on the part of literary studies as well as on the part of art theory and practice. Since the so-called “performative turn”, texts seem to make up for the wide avoidance of the former linguistic paradigm in Cultural Studies. But how do the particular references to performativity differ and how do they connect? How do texts make use of art and vice versa? And which political or powerful claims are involved? How are voice and writing related?
The fellows’ works deal with those questions in multiple and interesting ways by interrelating them to the topic of remembrance.
Each block course is split in two parts: Until noontime we get to know some theoretical positions (Genette, Faust, Butler) by discussing the texts. In the afternoons we meet at Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen where the hosting discussion group presents the artist’s work as well as some reflections on the relationship of theory and practice.
To complete the course it is demanded to host one discussion group. At the end of the semester a short paper (about 4 to 5 pages) has to be written. The will to take actively part in the discussions is assumed.
The corpus will be provided soon.
