603043 History, Concepts and Terms of Critical Gender Research: Gender and Intersectionality
winter semester 2015/2016 | Last update: 18.01.2016 | Place course on memo listThe aim of the course is to spur engagement with newer approaches in gender studies, which aim at analyzing the intersectionality of diverse forms of social power relations. The course presents an overview over theories and debates within intersectionality research as well as practical applications in the field of education sciences. After having visited the course, participants can identify different approaches in intersectionality research, can name missing research areas and formulate new questions for further research.
Newer approaches in gender studies see gender as intertwined with other social structures. In lived reality, gender is always already experienced as intertwined with other relations of power, such as age, sexuality, race or class. This leads to differences within supposedly homogeneous groups as well as complex relations of marginalization and superordination. The paradigm of intersectionality critically analyses the complex workings of divergent social structures of dominance. In so doing, intersectionality not only aims at describing complex situations, but also formulating critique as well as possibilities for emancipatory change.
