Ability to incorporate academic literature about metaphors critically; competence to analyze texts and utterances according to the methods of different linguistic disciplines; ability to write a term paper that meets academic standards

Metaphors occur quite frequently in many different text types and communicative genres. There, they fulfill various functions: they help us to say things that we could not express otherwise; they can make utterances vivid and illustrative; they can also serve as a rhetoric device. In the course, we will take a look at current theories of metaphors and discuss methods to analyze metaphors.
