622009 Global History: Iran in the 20th Century

After a short outline of the socio-economic and political foundations of Modern Iran during the Safawid and Quajar dynasties this class will cover political, economic and social aspects of Iran’s history in the 20th century, especially during the Pahlavi rule (1921-79) and after the revolution of 1979.
Considering Iran’s particular geo-political situation, special emphasis will be put on Iran’s foreign relations.
Lecture
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, active participation in discussions, comments, written paper.
A full reading list will be provided at the start of the course.
Online-enrollment required, starting on Sept 1, 2015!
A field trip to Iran - in cooperation with the Department of Ancient History and Ancient Near Eastern Studies - is planned for the spring term 2016. This class will also serve as in-depth preparation for students wishing to enroll in that field trip.
