800701 Scientific Errors
winter semester 2015/2016 | Last update: 05.02.2024 | Place course on memo listBasic understanding of scientific methodology and its development on the basis of the intricacies of empirical knowledge.
Modern science is appreciated for its history of success and progress. Its development, however, was not as linear and uniform as is sometimes assumed, and in fact it is proper scientific methodology not only to build on the successes of vindicated theories but also to discard refuted hypotheses or theories.
Although it is rarely done, it still can be worthwhile, in particular from a broader philosophical perspective and for the purpose to learn about scientific method, to take a look at theories which once were promising (e.g. Lamarck's theory of natural history) or even widely accepted (Phlogiston) but later were dismissed and went into oblivion.
In the course, a number of these discarded theories will be introduced and discussed with the specific aim to get some grasp on scientific methodology *through the backdoor*.
Seminar style: students' presentations plus discussion.
Presentation plus short end-term paper.
