Students are able to apply the basics of qualitative research: developing a research question, selecting an interview method, doing an interview, transcribing the interview, analysing the data with the method of qualitative content analyses (Mayring, 2008), reflect on the research process.

An introduction to the basics of the qualitative research process will be given and differences between qualitative and quantitative research designs will be highlighted. The different steps of a qualitative research design will be elaborated on and practiced. Starting with the development of a research question, students will subsequently learn how to select a proper interview method (with a focus on the method of guideline interviews) and consider important ethical questions. The students will conduct interviews independently and learn how to transcribe them. In the second major part of the course the techniques of analysing interview data according to qualitative content analysis (Mayring, 2008) will be trained and practised. The course ends with a short presentation of the students´ research results and a final discussion of the research process.
