Overview and introduction to etiological aspects, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in children and adolescents

This course is about etiological aspects and diagnosis of mental disorders in children and adolescents. We will start the lecture with an overview on mental disorders and discuss diagnostic and treatment challenges in that age group. The main focus of this seminar is going to be on the different mental disorders like affective disorders (depression, bipolar disorders), psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, delusional disorders), eating disorders, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, personality disorders (especially borderline personality disorder) and somatic symptom disorders in children and adolescents. Additionally autism-spectrum disorders and ADHD in children will be explained in detail. These disorders will be discussed in terms of assessment and treatment using clinical case examples. Furthermore, we will talk about attachment issues relevant for child and adolescent psychopathology and their implications for the therapeutic intervention.

To pass this seminar a presentation, participation in discussions on clincal case examples and a seminar paper is required
