The participants should receive insight in the historical-systematic theory of ‘Bildung’ and education. They should identify and learn approaches of the theory of ‘Bildung’ and education.

The theory of 'Bildung' (a special German term) has lost ground in the debate about the knowledge based society and the related goals. The aim is to work with sociological and pedagogical concepts of education/‘Bildung’ to understand  the program of 'self-formation of humans' and the development of the 'Bildungsbürgertum'. At first the ancient concept of ‘Bildung’ and the Enlightenment are reference points. The declared goal of Enlightment is liberty, maturity and the courage to make use of the own intellect as well as features of a modern self-image. After the Enlightenment period (‘the pedagocial century’) Humboldt builds on the new humanitarian ‘Bildungs’ concept which was influential for the educational system of Prussia and other countries. The education/’Bildungs’  theory is considered in the context of social change, its crises and reforms. The final is the pedagogical reform movement in the beginning of the 20th century.

Thus, a discussion of selected reference points in the social history of ‘Bildung’ and education gives an insight into sociological and pedagogical concepts and can revive critical positions in the present debate about the knowledge based society and implications.

Lecture and discusison, group work (basic texts, group discussion).
