Basic knowledge of sources for the history of philosophy and the capapility in reading them with a source-critical approach.

The course deals with the relationship of philosopher with power. Beginning with the oldest wisdom texts from Egypt and Mesopotamia we will focus on the relationship of the sage (rarely als female sages) or philosopher with kings. The main part of the course will be devoted to classical sources and will focus on Plato, Aristotel and Diogenes of Sinope. Also the relationship of Alexander the Great and the various philosophers (Greeks, Chaldeans, Indians, ...) will be discussed.

Lecture and presentation of facts, results of research and scholarly debates, discussion and collaborative critical analyses of sources.

Active participation, readings, regular and active participation in discussions, presentation and a paper.

Literature provided with annotations is announced during the course

Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (BA Classica et Orientalia 2009/BA History 2009 and BA Classica et Orientalia 2015/BA History 2015), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
