Expansion and consolidation of specific knowledge in the field of contemporary history by examination of new and uncommon topics, taking into account current tendencies and controversies of research, applying scientific skills (methods and working techniques) and linking with basic content, development of skills for the independent formulation of historical questions.

War, armed conflicts, forced displacement and annihilation/extermination are central themes of historical and memorial debates. The topics discussed are wide-spread: The experiences of the victims, the perspectives of the perpetrators, the role and the future of the Holocaust-memory and of other crimes against humanity, collective, cultural, communicative memory, politicking, international memorial collaboration and other topics will be discussed in class.

Required reading, oral presentations, written paper, discussion and exercises.

Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, required reading, active participation in discussions, oral presentation, (written) seminar-paper.

A reading list will be provided at the beginning of the course.
