By reading and translating ancient Greek texts into German the students broaden their passive language skills of ancient Greek: They consolidate their knowledge of Greek vocabulary and morphology and expand their understanding of the most common phenomenons of Greek syntax. In addition to that they gain a basic insight into the political concepts of  different authors of the classical period.

Mainly Pseudo-Xenophon "Athenaion Politeia" supplemented by shorter passages e.g. from Herodot 3.80 ff., Thucydides 2.37 ff.,  Plato "Republic" (book 8) ...

Lecture, reading and translating, discussion. Course-material will regularely provided on "OLAT", i.e. the online learning tool used at Innsbruck University.

At the end of the semester there will be a written exam.

Will be notified in the preliminary talk (= 1. meeting: 07.03.2017)

Basic knowledge of Greek ("Graecum") is requested, the course is also suitable for students of Latin, Archaeology and Ancient History. For each meeting students are expected to prepare selected passages of text at home. They should attend the course regularly and participate actively in class.
