Learning Outcome:

The aim of this seminar is to learn to engage philosophically and on a high standard in the contemporary debate concerning moral realism, especially concerning its nonnaturalistic branch.

Contents:

We read the newest literature on moral metaphysics. Our questions will be: Why is it not possible to naturalize normativity? Do moral properties supervene on natural properties? Which kind of supervenience is at stake? Can supervenience be explained by moral principles? Can it by explained by theistic facts? Why are moral properties not queerer than other properties?

Methods:

Reading and discussion of texts, presentation.

Assessment:

Weekly papers and a long essay.

Newest articles by William J. Fitzpatrick, Terrence Cuneo, Russ Shafer-Landau, Graham Oddie, Aaron Elliott, Derek Parfit, Christoph Halbig and others.

Prerequisites:

None.
