Personal sentiments and political emotions bother the minds and are intensively explored in various academic fields in recent decades. In this seminar, we particularly ask about their significance for personal and political decision-making.

Are emotions windows to the world and to fellow human beings or are they useless to or hinder decision making? Do they have to be restrained to enable a good life or are they indicators of ethically sensitive questions? Are feelings and reason opposites or are both part of the process to gain knowledge? What are the expressions of feelings in different cultures and at different times? What is their supposed relationship to sex and gender? Is the human emotional capital explored and manipulated in favor of the market? What is the role of emotions in the political public? Can we or must we increase our emotional competence in order to make ethically responsible decisions? These and other questions will be examined in the seminar by means of selected literature.

Introduction to the subject; independent acquisition of the issues by the participants; presentations; discussions; working in groups.
