summer semester 2018 | Last update: 13.11.2018 | Place course on memo listKnowledge about the rapidly growing field of research on multilingualism, including language attitudes, language acquisition, language use and language policy with a focus on students with Slavic languages as L1 in Austrian and German schools.
Ability to analyze different kinds of (already existing) data related to the topic.
Ability to reflect the role of First languages/Heritage languages as well as institutional contexts (school), language policy and the social importance of multilingualism – especially in the context of a predominantly “German speaking” society.
Ability to critically handle and reflect different research methods and analytical tools.
This seminar addresses students of the German and the Slavic Department as well.
There will be two parts:
I: Theoretical part: We will deal with questions of language acquisition, multilingualism, language attitudes and the role of language policy at school.
II. Empirical part: The participants will analyse existing data of language acquisition elicitated from students with dominantly Slavic first languages. Students of the German and the Slavic department will collaborate.
On this basis we will discuss questions of acquisition and maintenance of languages.
Presentation, preparatory reading and discussions , 1-2 (short) presentation(s)
Oral and written: preparatory reading, active participation in class, 1-2 (short) presentation(s); written midterm exam, term paper
