- Addressing important basic issues and questions of ethics in general as well as Islamic ethics
- To understand the different sources of Islamic ethics (Koran, Sunna ...) as well as the influences of the Greek, Persian and pre-Islamic-Arabic ethical conceptions
- Presentation and comparison of classical theological, philosophical and mystical theories of Islamic ethics
- To understand the new approaches of applied Islamic ethics (medicine and bioethics, economic ethics, political ethics, research ethics ...), especially under the conditions of plural societies

In the lecture, an effort is first made to explain the basic concepts of islamic ethics, morality, aḫlāq, adab and to clarify their similarities and differences. Then, with regard to general ethics, the three fundamental questions of Islamic ethics will be  discussed. As a science of moral action, it deals primarily with the following questions:
- The pursuit of happiness in this world and the Hereafter
- The definition and origin of good and evil as well as the division of actions into good or evil (or bad)
- The free will as  precondition for responsibility and moral

All of these questions formed the subject of centuries lasting of discussions and debates in the history of Islamic ideas and were dealt with by Islamic theologians, philosophers and mystics. The main focus of the lecture is therefore the question of the the genesis and development of  'ilm-al-aḫlāq as well as the critical examination of the differnet islamic ethical theories (using the example of Ibn Miskawayh, al-Māwardī and al-Ġazzālī)
In the last part of the lecture an overview of modern applied Islamic ethics  will be provided.

The contents of the lectures are presented and will subsequently be discussed in depth
