Overview on ancient literacy in different cultures (e.g. Ancient Near East, Greece and Rome). By selected examples, questions concerning the level of literacy shall be answered. Which ancient sources can be used to evaluate reading and writing abilities? Who was able to read and write(only an elite minority or also lower strata of society)? For what purposes people wrote and read? Was there an official language policy? How effective was written propaganda in antiquity, if nobody could read it?
Lecture, discussion of the sources (in translation or original languages), work in groups, presentation of results.
Presentation of the results of the group work (with handout), participation in the discussion.
Literature will be announced in the course.
The prerequisites of the respective curricula do apply. CleO: positive completion of compulsory modules 1, 6 and 7.
