612041 Film as an Artistic and Social Medium: The "New Waves" in Eastern European Cinema of the 1960s
winter semester 2018/2019 | Last update: 19.09.2018 | Place course on memo listParticipants will become acquainted with the cinema in Eastern European countries of the 1950s and 1960s; they will broaden their knowledge on cinema and its aethetics in general as well as on culture, politics and history in Eastern Europe.
In the 1960s, starting with France, cinema changed fundamentally. The course will be centered around the so-called "new waves" in Eastern European cinema of the late 1950s and 1960s: in Poland the early films of Roman Polanski und Jerzy Skolimowski, in Czechoslovakia the films of Milos Forman, Vera Chytilová or Jiří Menzel, in the Soviet Union the cinema of Marlen Khutsiev, Larisa Sheptiko, Andrei Tarkovskii or Kira Muratova, in Jugoslavia the films of Dušan Makavejev or Želimir Žilnik and in Hungary the films of Miklós Janscó and Istvan Szabo.
