Students learn about life situations and living conditions of women and men in antiquity and become familiar with the specifics of women's and gender studies in classics. The selected examples from different cultures promote a cross-cultural and networked thinking about of the ancient worlds and promote the handling of ancient texts from a historical perspective.

Living conditions of women and men in the ancient world are discussed on the basis of written and pictorial sources in their historical and cultural context: Fields of activity in economy and cult; Healing professions; Scopes of action of women and men in their social environment; Body concepts as well as women and men as sexual objects and victims of violence. Finally, antique testimonies of or about poets, philosophers and teachers are in the spotlight. Focussing on individual aspects makes it possible to refer to examples from different cultural areas and to give a broad overview of the living conditions presented in the ancient sources.
