Competence in handling letters as sources for historical research. From reading the German script, putting the message of the letters in their historical context and preparing them for publication.

Private letters are important historical sources and offer deep insights into subjective experiences. This course is a research lab to learn how to cope with various original (and copied) letters from the First World War from enciphering to interpreting and learning the first steps of editing.

From reading letters dating back to 1914-1918 to discussing their content.

Competent handling of German script (Kurrent/Sütterlin) is not a prerequisite. An individual study of this script before the course starts might help though.
