A survey of environmental science and policy issues, including ecology, engineering, geology, geography, law, economics, philosophy, and sociology.

We will discuss many critical environmental issues and will be able to draw extensively from the setting of the Alps. This course will raise awareness in issues and topics that matter directly to the students’ lives or that are challenges that confront humanity in general. Most of the global issues facing civilization at the moment can be traced to earth or environmental sciences in one-way or the other (global climate change, extinction and biodiversity decline, natural resources, etc.). This discipline therefore lends itself well for teaching interdisciplinary and interdependent concepts, especially with regard to the global interconnectedness of natural and social systems. Students will practice their critical thinking skills so they can become life-long learners and inquirers. We will discuss questions like “What is the scientific evidence that the collapse of the Mayan civilization coincided with an extended draught period and what does that mean for future global climate change?” Having students appreciate and understand the interrelatedness of people and their environment is very important for becoming informed citizens. The Austrian and Innsbruck region in particular allows to engage the students in many aspects the course topics as described in the course catalog and develop a hypothesis driven course that centers on understanding environmental issues within a local and international framework. This course will include fieldtrips.

The University of New Orleans International Summer School program has a mandatory class attendance policy. All students are required to attend class for all morning classes and any required afternoon and/or weekend fields trips and lectures. No unexcused absences are allowed. However, LFU students who have to miss a UNO class due to LFU examinations in the first two weeks of our program, can receive one excused absence for this. Any further unexcused absences will result in an academic penalty. Each faculty member determines the penalty for missed classes. Most professors deduct a letter grade for each additional missed class day. For details, please refer to your course syllabi, which will be distributed on the first day of class.
