- …to develop a research question and hypotheses based on classical or contemporary sociological theories on social inequality or social change.
- … to operationalize hypotheses using questionnaire inventories from studies such as EVS, ESS, or ISSP.
- … to utilize advanced statistical methods to test hypotheses using the software package STATA.
- … to interpret and present the results of their analyses and to produce a research report in which the theoretical background, hypotheses, data, methods, and results are documented.
Content:
The objective of research project I in winter semester 2017/18 was the theory, the conceptualization and the exploration of the topic “societal precarisation, social conflicts and consequences concerning the social structure”. Now the focal point of research project II in summer semester 2018 will be the proper transposition of an empirical approach. This includes the data collection, data analysis, reporting as far as the presentation of the results.
After finishing the previous lessons with success, the students are able to conduct an empirical, sociological project (research vs. study design, hypothesis, method of investigation). A focal point will be socio economic indicators, indexes, ‘Lebenslagenansatz’ and poverty research.
Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).
Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations"
