An Understanding of Early Christian and Early Jewish Self-Perception

In the Iron Age the Jerusalem Temple was considered the most important religious authority of the Jewish people. In the Second Temple period it was not only the religious but also the political centre of the province of Judea. Its significance, theology and role in salvation were questions for both early rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity. The seminar will look in detail at the meaning of the temple for the peoples of the Old Testament era, and its subsequent reception in Jewish and Christian societies. Both faith communities – each in its own way – developed some form of cult and theology on the basis of the Jerusalem temple.
