This course is designed to enable students to develop the necessary skills to translate technical texts on economics and business from German into English. Focuses will include researching and using correct technical terminology, developing students' background knowledge on economics, perfecting use of grammar and punctuation, and translating texts to meet textual conventions in the target language.

The main aims of the course are to develop students' ability to translate technical texts related to the areas of business and economy, to develop their background knowledge on these topics, and to put translation theories into practice.

Students will translate texts on the topics of business and economics from German into English. These translations will then be analysed in class. The in-class discussion will include dealing with difficulties encountered when translating the text as well as looking in detail at the economic issues addressed in the text.

There will be two written exams during the course of term (one mid-term test and one test at the end of term). Students must also holds presentations in English looking at a specific topic related to the world of business and economics (topics will be given by the lecturer). The final grade for the course comprises the grades for the two written test and the grade for the oral presentation.

Literature will be communicated if and when necessary via OLAT. Students should be aware that it is essential to regularly read newspapers and magazines on business and economics in German (WirtschaftsWoche, Handelsblatt, etc.) and English (The Economist, The Financial Times, etc.) both in the run-up to and during the course in order to develop the necessary background and language knowledge.

There are no prerequisites for attending this course.

For organisational reasons it is essential that all students attend the first lecture of this course.
