622019 UE Philosophy of Science "Anything goes": Development theories and development politics in a global historical perspective
winter semester 2019/2020 | Last update: 14.10.2019 | Place course on memo listUnderstanding of questions relating to the philosophy of science through reading and discussing suitable classical or innovative texts of historiography resp., knowledge of developments in research and criticism of paradigms.
Introduction to the history of development theories and policies from a global historical perspective: Reading of classics of development theory and introduction to development policy as a topic of 20th century global history. Among other things, we deal with colonialism and development, development policy in connection with the Cold War and decolonisation, various criticisms of the development paradigm and an oral history of Austrian development cooperation.
Regular participation in class and in the discussions; reading the assigned material; short presentation in class; submission of a short essay (2-3 pages) on a topic related to class. Although the readings and discussions will be in English, both presentations and final essays could be held/written in German.
The list of required reading will be given at the beginning of the semester and most of the readings will be uploaded to OLAT. The readings will be modified to fit non-native speakers.
For students of the curriculum BA History (2009) and BA Classica et Orientalia (2009), a reduced workload applies.
