The lecture will focus on the most important historical trends also focussing on seminal developments in cultural and social history and reviewing their importance for the succeeding epochs.
The lecture offers an overview on the history of ancient cultures from the emergence of the first city states in the Ancient Near East and in Egypt through the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages.

This lecture can also be recognized as Basics I OR Basics II Ancient History for BA History (2009W) and Teacher Training Program HSP (Diploma) students, who are still missing one of the two Basics lectures. In this case there will be a reduced workload.
